"Mobile Internet", a main topic for the Fundamentos Web 2006 conference

CTIC is also hosting meetings of researchers and managers for the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) in advance of the Conference to analyze the current status of the Mobile access to the Net.

The use of mobile devices to browse through the Net in the same way as it can be done with desktop computers will be a main topic in the Fundamentos Web (Web Foundations) conference. This event will be held in Oviedo, October 3rd to 5th, with the attendance of noted experts. The conference will have the participation of Vinton Cerf, designer of the basic Internet architecture.

Fundamentos Web 2006 is organized by Fundación CTIC and the W3C Spanish Office and is supported by the e-Asturias 2007 strategy for the development of the Information Society. For this year's edition, the conference also has also the sponsorship Microsoft and Adobe, and the collaboration of the online edition of the newspaper El Mundo and the specialized magazine PC Actual. The period of registration ends on September 27th.

The "Mobile Internet" becomes a real challenge to both users and web developers. Fundación CTIC is also hosting meetings for the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) in advance of the Conference. Two groups in the Mobile Web Initiative (MWI) will meet in Gijon to discuss current work and next actions.

CTIC is one of the 30 organizations which has taken part in the development of "Mobile Web Best Practices" document. The last working draft was released at the end of June and it has been an important advance. The Asturian Technological foundation has 6 researchers at W3C, in Accessibility, Semantic Web and Mobility areas.

Daniel Appelquist, Chair of the Mobile Web Best Practices Working Group at W3C on behalf of Vodafone, will present at Fundamentos Web. Appelquist will explain the relevance of developing web sites which work in mobile devices in order to obtain interesting money savings; furthermore, how it avoids the fragmentation of the Net.

New Web Applications

Mobilizing Web applications allows to users, make use of different kind of devices to access to the same information. In order to support this, it is necessary a global infrastructure based on standards, which allows interoperability.

This fact is producing great investor efforts by technological multinationals, financial organizations, and other enterprises which are reorganizing their presence in the Net.

In this sense, the goal of Fundamentos Web is to study in depth the Web applications interoperability as a new way to understand Internet. So, these efficient applications which carry out a communication and an accessible information exchange from anywhere, at anytime, and using any device.
