Digging Beyond User Preferences
Eric Fain
  • Many of the applications you develop are applications you would use. This makes it easy to know what will work and what won't. At some point, however, you'll find yourself developing something that you would only occasionally use, and suddenly you're treading in dark places. You know user research is important, you know the experience of using the product should be positive, if not delightful. But sometimes the findings you get are pretty difficult to translate into a decision about the software.
  • Mental models are diagrams that represent the underlying philosophies and emotions that drive people's behavior, matched up with the ways you think you can support them with your software. Rather than knowing "I like to go to movies alone," you'll learn the myriad reasons why. (E.g. "I like to give the director the attention and respect he deserves, because when I wrote a play in college, people didn't pay attention very well, they didn't get the point, and I felt frustrated.") Knowing the motivating philosophy opens up different avenues for supporting the behavior. You could, for example, offer additional means for this type of moviegoer to "get the point" of the movie. Mental models are useful as structures for attaching these ideas to sets of philosophies and for generating new ideas in places where there are gaps.

CMS, Standards, Accessibility, and other Tales (Panel)
  • Nowadays, every enterprise uses a Content Management System to organize, store, and serve their information. There are numerous choices: from the most complex, flexible, and powerful solutions to the simplest ones; the expensive, the cheap, and the free platforms; centred on the information as the final product, or only focused on enterprise intranets.
  • Should you care about standards? Yes, it's obvious. The majority of the CMSs are capable of outputting standards compliant, and valid code, but this it not enough. The invited experts talk about the "magic" process happened within these systems, and the challenges they have found in their products.

Administraciones Públicas y Empresas en la era de los Social Media
Carlos Guadián
  • Social Media are the protagonists in Internet, and in times of crisis, such as now, they are seen as cheap and easy to implement tool to reach the target users.
  • Both, enterprises and governments are starting to implement new communication strategies. Using Social Media as spreading tools, and even more, building a comunity around a service, product, or an organization is more usual.
  • In this new environment needs are based on the users' discussion on the Net. Both, public and private organizations should to be involved in the conversation, and they should have an active listening attitude. Obviously, they also should manage their digital identity properly.
  • But, Social Media are not being used only as another piece of digital branding, and oriented to the users. Also, they are used as another element in "employer branding", for talent recruiting, and such as a tool for keeping them into organizations. These new tools have had effect on communication inside organizations.
